Shelter Policy On Stray Animals:
Missaukee Humane Society contracts with Missaukee County to admit and house stray animals found within Missaukee County. Animals admitted as stray were found (running at large, etc,) and will be held for the required holding period per Michigan Law for stray animals. Michigan Law requires shelters to hold stray animals for four days (without collar or ID) and seven days (with collar or ID).
A $15 pickup fee (per day) will be charged. Our policy is to vaccinate upon intake if no identification is attached to the animal whereas an owner can be contacted right away. Those charges are not included in the $15/day charge. Animals not claimed during the holding period will be made available for adoption once their stray hold is lifted. Missaukee County residents can purchase licenses through the Missaukee County Treasurer's office. Having a collar with license tags helps shelter staff return these animals to their owners faster.
